Pet Connection

Patti Dillingham and her friend Stephanie Moore have always wanted to start a business but they were not sure of what type of business to start. After spending many years in the hotel industry they were ready to venture out on their own. They stumbled on their business when their beloved dog Louise died - they learned that her death could have been prevented or at the least delayed with proper nutrition. This started them on a quest to understand the pet food industry; what goes into the food and the affect it has on their health. They also learned that most owners do not mind spending a little more on pet food because most pets are a part of the family.

With this information in hand, Patti contacted the SBDC at UCF for assistance. She attended the Small Business Basics seminar series, then sat down with Pauline Davis for one-on-one counseling. Pauline assisted with reviewing the business plan, overall business guidance and selecting the final location. Pattie and Stephanie decided to finance the business through savings, friends, family and a home equity loan. Due to limited funds, they did most of the work on the facility themselves such as painting, shelving and decorating. Along the way they picked up some very useful information, including how to get rid of noxious paint odors.

In November 2003 the doors to Louise’ Pet Connection opened its doors at 3005 W. Lake Mary Blvd, Lake Mary, FL. Celebrating their first year anniversary, the business is doing well and is ahead of the projections. Their greatest challenge is controlling the growth and cash flow. As the repeat customer increases there is a constant demand for increasing inventory. They are very pleased and excited about the future of the business.

Patti and Stephanie say, “The assistance provided by Pauline Davis of the Small Business Development is priceless. She continues to support and encourages us, we highly recommend her.”
