Unzipping and Zipping Files in the Magruder Lab

(The main Magruder Lab does not have WinZip installed -- only the older PkZip. These instructions are for PkZip.) 

Unzipping the Downloaded files

1.   First download all the files to a certain directory (Temp directory is recommended and the rest of the instructions below are given according to the Temp directory. However you can do the same for General directory by replacing the General with Temp) you want to unzip.

2.   Go to START in windows and select Command Prompt. When you do that you will see a black screen.

3.   Type cd..

4.   cd Temp

5.    pkunzip *.zip

6.   Now you have unzipped the files. You can go to Windows Explorer and select  the unzipped file in your directory. Your computer may not recognize the type of file, and show a window " Open With". If you know it is an Excel file, choose Excel to open the file; if you know it is a text file, choose Wordpad or Word.

Unzipping the files from floppy disk

1.   Using Windows Explorer, copy your zip file in your disk to the Temp file in the hard drive C.

2.   Then follow the same procedures above starting from 2 till the end.

Zipping files to your diskette

1.   Create a new folder (e.g. ism3011)in C drive and make sure there is nothing else in that folder.

2.   Go to START in windows and select Command Prompt. When you do that you will see a black screen.

3.   Type cd..

4.   Type cd ism3011 (PS: The folder name ism3011 is only an example. You can name your folder however you want, but make sure that you type your folder name instead of the given example ism3011)

5.   pkzip *.*

6.   Now you zipped the files. Using Windows Explorer, copy your folder in the C drive to your floppy disk.
