Alternative to WinZip

Downloading Power Archiver

There is an alternative to using Winzip (since the business lab does not have it anymore) called Power Archiver.  You can find it at http://www.powerarchiver.com/

  1. Click on the link or go to http://www.powerarchiver.com

  1. Click the download link on the left side of the screen

  1. There you should see a list of programs, servers, and file sizes.  Under server, click on the link the says “ USA ” and download Power Archiver (latest version).

  1. When the program has finished downloading, choose install and the program will install on your computer.  Then click “ok” to finish.  It should be installed under the start-programs menu under “power desk”.

Opening a Zipped File

  1. Find the zipped file you downloaded.  It will look like a folder with a zipper on the front. Double click on the file and a menu should pop up.
  2. At the top of the menu, click “archive” and then “extract”.  Next, select the folder which you wish to save the unzipped file.  Then click “extract” and close the power archiver.
  3. If the new file looks like a paper with a windows icon on it, you need to add an extension (to be able to open it in excel).  To do this, right click on the icon and select “rename”.  The file name should be highlighted.  Put the mouse cursor at the end of the name and left click, it should now not be highlighted and the cursor will be at the end.  Next type “.xls” and press enter.  It should now look like a sheet of paper with an X on it.  Now you can double click on it to open the file in excel.
