Spring 2008 - MAN 3025 - Management of Organizations Students:

Welcome to the MAN 3025 course in the UCF-CBA undergraduate business program. This semester I will be teaching two sections of Management of Organizations:

  • Lecture, Section AM81,  MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY, South Lake Rm. 303,  6:00 - 8:50PM

This is the basic management course taken by all College of Business Administration students.  It is also a limited elective for various other majors. Management of Organizations is an introduction to four functions of management – planning, organizing, leadership, and control – and the roles and challenges faced by managers in today’s world.

The new format of this four-credit course uses a mix of lecture, hands-on team management interviews, videotaped role-plays, testing events of exams, student/instructor and student/student interaction.  The fourth credit will emphasize MANAGEMENT SEGMENTS WITH THEIR CONTEMPORARY AUTHORITIES as it relates to the managerial functions of planning, organizing, and controlling. It will also take a look, via case scenarios we put together, at how to motivate others in the workplace.  Manangement often dictates the honesty and integrity styles used in dealing with new and old issues...we will take a look at our own leadership styles and learn how to adapt to the other five. Most of our hands on this semester will be focused on reading and application through reading and surveying 21st Century authorities in the areas of teamwork, organizational development, leadership, communication, interpersonal skills. Management theory will be discussed in class and supplemented by practical assignments – the students’ observations of managers in the workplace and through guest speaker discussions.

Students should come to class with the assignments completed in order to be successful in their role play tapings and discussions. This course will cover current global trends in the macro-environment of business and stresses the cultural dynamics of organizations and teams.

Many topics covered in this class will not be covered by any other course taken by the students yet may affect them in the workplace, so relevance to the workplace is also of significance. Learning will take place from a variety of tools, namely: lectures, team assignments of cases and articles, written individual assignments, video clips, and special projects.

This course is organized and equipped with tools such as online instruments on emotional intelligence and personal values, Webcourses, and the books for reading and analysis to keep you on track and for me to always be available to you as you work towards the successful completion of this course. Checking course announcements at least once a day on this website or Webcourses and I will send you E-community emails to let you know about updated sites. Contact me between classes should questions or issues arise that I can quickly respond to or resolve.

I look forward to working with you to facilitate class discussion and learning.                       Prof. Jan Daugherty
