Your grades are posted. Participation points are out of a total of 5, and "project" grades (the last assignment) are out of 20. I have been quite generous, I think. I won't entertain any groveling for grades, but if I have made a mistake, I won't hesitate to correct it. Enjoyed you as a class, good luck! dr c 4/292002 |
| I've added some new readings and powerpoint slides and a project assignment! See the schedule. dr c 4/15/2002 |
| Ok, here's instructions on how to create the model we were working on in class in Version 2 of Salsa. |
| Ok, here's a link to Salsa Version 1.1. Sorry about the mess up in class. Hopefully we can get this working better on Monday. dr c |
| I've been trying to find some object modeling software for you. I've decided to use a package that I've used before. It's called Salsa. Here's a link to a zip file with the Salsa setup software. The file is 20mb. I will burn some CD's and hand them out, if you don't want to download it. Don't print the manual, it's 500 pages! I'll demo this in class. I think that will be enough to get you started. dr c 3/31/2002 |
| I also added links to an introduction to object concepts. See the sechedule for the week of 3/25. There's links to example databases for the fish question and the SQL question in the schedule below. dr c 3/27/2002 |
| Here's links to some example SQL queries, and an employee database and a dog database, both of which have sample SQL queries. Look at the relationships and tables for the sample databases and try to do the queries before you actually look at the query itself. You may ignore queries that use Exists or Aliases. Good luck! dr c 3/19/2002 |
Here's the Random Accounts File and the Index File that you need for your next assignment. Also, I left copies of the random file documentation with Stacey in 309. |
| In studying for the exam, look at
the following questions at the end of each chapter. Appendix A: 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14 Chapter 1: All questions Chapter 6: All questions Chapter 10: All questions Be prepared to write some simple pseudo-code algorithms for handling files. dr c 2/4/02 |
| You may have until Wednesday to turn in your first homework assignment. dr c 2/4/2002 |
| Here's a link to an online Visual Basic tutorial. Since Access uses a version of Visual Basic that we will be talking about later, I'd recommend that ALL of you take a look at it. It's pretty simple and straightforward. dr c 1/30/2002 |
| I put a link to a zip file with the VB examples on the schedule page. I'll start putting announcements there so you won't have to look here. jfc 1/29/2002 |
| Here is your first assignment. You are to write a program in the language of your choice that will take this transaction file and apply the transactions to this accounts file. This will be due Monday, February 4 at the beginning of class. Turn in a printout of your program. jfc 1/28/2002 |
| Sorry, my website has been down or uneditable for much of the last few days and I haven't been able to update it. It finally seems to be working ok. jfc 1/28/2002 |
| I'm back! And finally ready to get started on
the semester. You should be able to access the WebCT site now.
Your user name is your initials, plus the last 5 digits of your student
number. For example, something like jfc12345. Your
password is the first 4 digits of your student number. The
course name you will see is correct (Database) but the number is wrong.
It's 4212 instead of 6938. Just ignore that, I'm using the same
site that I used last year in the undergraduate course. There is
still some old material from last semester out there. It was
supposed to have been deleted when I reset the course. I will try
to get rid of it soon.
We will be using WebCT for discussion forums (where future chapters of my book can be found). The schedule and announcements can be found here. We had trouble last semester with files on WebCT, so I'm trying to restrict its use to only those things that seem to work. Also, I uploaded the wrong version of the file access presentation before. The correct one is available now for download. jfc 1/14/2002 |
