David F. Scott, Jr.
Executive Director,
Dr. Phillips Institute for the Study of American Business Activity
Holder, Phillips-Schenck Chair in American Private Enterprise
and Professor of Finance
Dr. Scott received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He holds the M.B.A. from the University of Detroit, and the B.S.B.A. from the University of Akron. He is holder of the Phillips-Schenck Chair in American Private Enterprise, Executive Director of the Dr. Phillips Institute for the Study of American Business Activity, and Professor of Finance at the University of Central Florida. He has been at UCF since l982. From l977-l982 he was Area Coordinator, then Head, Department of Finance, Insurance, and Business Law at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. During l985-l986 he was President of the Financial Management Association, an international group of 9000 members. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of FMA from 1986-1993.
Dr. Scott is a member of the Board of Directors of CompBenefits Corporation, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. CompBenefits is a national leader in the managed dental care and vision care industry with 2.3 million plan members in 23 states. At CompBenefits, Dr. Scott has chaired the Compensation Committee and served on the Special Committee of outside directors who analyze acquisition opportunities. Presently he serves on the Audit Committee. Additionally, Dr. Scott is a member of the local Board of Directors of BankFIRST-Goldenrod. BankFIRST, based in Winter Park, Florida, specializes in commercial banking services for small businesses.
Dr. Scott served from 1995-2000 on the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's economic forecasting panel which generates the Livingston Survey published nationwide by the bank; he was a member of Florida Trend's Board of Economists from 1995-1999; and from 1993-1997 was a member of the editorial board of the Bank Funds Management Report published by Sheshunoff Information Services, Inc. From 1992-2001, Dr. Scott was a member of the Investment Committee of the UCF Foundation, Inc. He served on the Board of Directors of The Economics Club of Orlando from l984-l990.
He is past founding co-editor of the Journal of Financial Research, past associate editor for the Akron Business and Economic Review, and past associate editor for Financial Management. He is past president of the Southern Finance Association. He has served as Vice President-Annual Program for the l983 meetings of the Financial Management Association.
His journal articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Financial Management, Engineering Economist, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Business Economics, The Bankers Magazine, Journal of Bank Research, Journal of Economics and Business, The Financial Review, Management Review, and others.
He has co-authored several texts, including: Cases in Finance (Prentice-Hall, lst Edition l977, 2nd Edition l984, 3rd Edition l993), Guide to Financial Analysis (McGraw-Hill, lst Edition l980, 2nd Edition l990), Basic Financial Management (Prentice-Hall, 1st Edition l979, 2nd Edition l982, 3rd Edition l985, 4th Edition l988, 5th Edition l99l, 6th Edition l993, 7th Edition 1996, 8th Edition 1999, 9th Edition in press for August 2001 shipment with a 2002 copyright), and Foundations of Finance: The Logic and Practice of Financial Management (Prentice-Hall, 1st Edition 1994, 2nd Edition 1998, 3rd Edition, 2001). Dr. Scott's co-authored texts with McGraw-Hill (Guide to Financial Analysis) and Prentice-Hall (Basic Financial Management) have been translated into Spanish and Estonian, respectively.
He has participated in training programs and workshops for several organizations, including the American Institute of Corporate Asset Management, Walt Disney World Co., the Florida Bankers Association, the Federal Land Banks, Barnett Bank, the Small Business Administration, Virginia Consulting Engineers Council, the Colgate-Darden Graduate School of Business Administration (University of Virginia), the Management Institute of the University of Central Florida, and the Universidad Rafael Landivar (Guatemala). He taught for ten years (1981-1990) in the Stonier Graduate School of Banking (American Bankers Association). He previously worked as a cost analyst for the Ford Motor Company and Massey-Ferguson, Ltd. Dr. Scott received a university-wide award for teaching excellence at Virginia Tech in l978 and was named Graduate Business Teacher of the Year at UCF in l984.
Dr. Scott's opinion-editorials and research pieces have appeared in several leading outlets including USA TODAY, The Wall Street Journal, Florida Trend, The Orlando Sentinel, The Miami Herald, The St. Petersburg Times, The Tampa Tribune, The Ft. Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel, Florida Today, Gainesville Sun, Ocala Star-Banner, Lakeland Ledger, The Palm Beach Post, Orlando Business Journal, and Orlando Magazine.
Dr. Scott's work is often the focus of business columnists. For example, his research-based writing has been the main subject of full columns in The Wall Street Journal, Florida Trend, Orlando Sentinel, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Florida Times-Union (Jacksonville), Las Vegas Review-Journal, and others.
Dr. Scott has addressed several corporate boards of directors and management executive committees. These have included Security National Corporation (now Huntington Bancshares, Florida), American Prepaid Professional Services (now CompBenefits Corporation, Atlanta), Citizens National Bank of Leesburg, FL. (now Huntington Bancshares, Florida), local directors and vice-presidents of Walt Disney World Co. (Orlando, FL), the advisory board of Pan American Bank (now BankAmerica), the executive committee of the United Way Campaign Cabinet (Central Florida), the board of directors and advisory board to Dr. Phillips, Inc. (commercial real estate developers and lessors), and the investment committees of several foundations. He is a frequent public speaker, having made approximately 96 formal presentations to trade organizations, corporations, professional associations, and civic groups over the immediate past ten years ended 2001.
