Production Index
Click the graph to download PDF version. Significance: Industrial production at the nation’s factories, mines, and utilities for June 2001 was 3.7 percent below the output of one year earlier. The year-over-year changes in this index produced by the Federal Reserve have been negative now for four consecutive months dating back to March of this year. The last nine monthly changes in this index (back to October 2000) have been negative. While the overall U.S. economy may not be in an "official" recession, the industrial output side certainly is.
